Our puppies are 8 weeks old before they leave for their new home. Those who share their homes with our puppies often describe them as intelligent and loyal, and, above all, possessing the desire to please their owners. Cairns are good with children and well-mannered in the home.

ARE CAIRNS GOOD WITH CHILDREN?

Cairn Terriers are good-tempered, affectionate dogs that make for good family pets. They’re full of energy and are highly tolerant of young children – as always, children should be taught to approach and touch dogs with care and all interactions between them should be supervised.

ARE CAIRNS GOOD WITH OTHER PETS?

Cairns are hardwired to chase and kill vermin. Small household pets are vermin to your Cairn. If cohabiting, there must be absolutely reliable barriers to prevent contact. Most get along well with other dogs, but some can be scrappy. May chase other household pets, but can learn to get along with cats.

DO CAIRNS NEED A LOT OF EXERCISE?

Ideally, the minimum should be 30 to 60 minutes daily. This can be just once a day, or two walks a day would be better if your schedule allows. Dogs also like routine, so try to schedule the walk for around the same time each day.

DO CAIRNS CHEW A LOT?

All Cairn Terriers should have a range of Fetch Toys, as well as Super Chewer Toys to take out some of their destructive behavior on.

ARE CAIRNS EASY TO TRAIN?

It’s actually quite the opposite. Cairn Terriers are highly intelligent, and like most Terriers, they will respond well to positive reinforcement training.

ARE CAIRNS EASY TO HOUSEBREAK?

They are a highly trainable breed and are eager to please their owners. Be firm and consistent in your training and you’ll have a housebroken cairn terrier in no time.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BATH MY CAIRN?

Bathing your Cairn too often will remove the protective oils from their coat and soften its natural coarse texture. One bath every three months is sufficient.

SHOULD I GET A MALE OR FEMALE CAIRN?

If you want a more affectionate dog for your home, work with your breeder to select a male Cairn for you. Female Cairns tend to be more independent than their male counterparts.

HOW LONG DO CAIRNS LIVE?

On average, Cairns live to around 12 to 15 years of age, but older dogs are not uncommon.

CAN WE MEET THE PUPS PARENTS?

You should always be able to see puppies at their home. If a breeder wants you to meet them elsewhere, that can be a red flag.

We welcome all new puppy owners to come to our facility, all we ask is that you call to schedule an appointment. Puppies have nap time, feeding time and socialization/play time and we like to keep them one a routine.
