Our puppies are 3 months old before they leave for their new home. Those who share their homes with our puppies often describe them as intelligent and loyal, and, above all, possessing the desire to please their owners. Westies are good with children and well-mannered in the home.
ARE WESTIES GOOD WITH CHILDREN?
Westies love attention and human company, they enjoy being part of all family activities. Westies are sturdy for their size, have lots of energy and love to run and play, so they can be a great match for kids, but they must be well socialised first.
ARE WESTIES GOOD WITH OTHER PETS?
A Westie puppy will generally accept any existing pets as part of their new family when they go to their new homes. Be sure not to ignore your existing pet when the new puppy comes home, so that they don’t act out or resent the puppy.
DO WESTIES BARK A LOT
Westies are not yappy dogs, but it’s true they do bark.
DO WESTIES RUN OR ROAM?
Yes. Westies are hunters and even the most well-trained and obedient Westie is not reliable when he spots a squirrel, bird or other varmint. A leash and a fence are your symbols of love. Neutering and spaying will reduce the desire to roam.
DO WESTIES NEED A LOT OF EXERCISE
They are energetic and need to be provided with regular exercise – ideally an hour or so each day. They enjoy the same activities that other dogs like to do.
DO WESTIES CHEW A LOT?
Yes, Westies are chewers. They can chew through any number of items and tend to do the most damage with their mouths. It’s always a great idea to divert their attention with strong durable toys.
ARE WESTIES EASY TO TRAIN?
Westies enjoy pleasing their owners. They are not stubborn, but may express their independent nature on occasion by demanding “What’s in it for me?”. Patience encouragement, praise, and rewards such as treats or play may be required to train new behaviors.
Westies respond very well to positive reinforcement training. In fact, they’re considered the more intelligent of the terrier breeds.
ARE WESTIES EASY TO HOUSEBREAK?
Yes, they like to be clean. Puppies which have been kept clean during their formative period should be easy to housebreak. A crate and a pen are useful tools for housebreaking.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BATH MY WESTIE?
If you are using the right type of shampoo and ensuring that you brush and comb your Westies before you bath them, then there is no reason why they can’t be bathed once every two weeks.
Make sure you are using a gentle shampoo, such as Goats Milk shampoo (try to avoid the Oatmeal shampoos recommended by pet stores as many Westies are allergic to grains).
SHOULD I GET A MALE OR FEMALE WESTIE?
While much of their behaviour will come down to their individual personality, generally males are more playful and easy-going. ThIS doesn’t mean a female Westie can’t be happy-go-lucky, but they often like things on their own terms and can be more bossy and demanding than males.
HOW LONG DO WESTIES LIVE?
On average, Westies live to around 12 to 15 years of age, but older dogs are not uncommon.
CAN WE MEET THE PUPS PARENTS?
You should always be able to see puppies at their home. If a breeder wants you to meet them elsewhere, that can be a red flag.
We welcome all new puppy owners to come to our facility, all we ask is that you call to schedule an appointment. Puppies have nap time, feeding time and socialization/play time and we like to keep them one a routine.
